Fuzzy Air-Fuel Ratio Control of a Small Gasoline Engine

This paper describes an investigation in which a fuzzy control paradigm was applied to a small spark-ignition gasoline-fuelled internal-combustion engine, to achieve regulation of the fuel injection system. The control system determined the amount of fuel required from a fuzzy algorithm that used the engine speed and manifold air pressure as input values. The parameters of the fuzzy system consisted of fuzzy input and output sets, and also a collection of rules. Together the fuzzy sets and rules determined the characteristics of the control system. A beneficial feature of the fuzzy control method was that the rules and fuzzy sets were convenient to interpret by the operator. This aided the optimisation process and resulted in quick and convenient tuning. Experimental results are presented, demonstrating that improved fuel regulation, exhaust emissions, output power and torque were achieved, using the fuzzy system, when compared to the original carburettor-based engine configuration.
